Project Overview

Pyrenees Shire Council and Central Highlands Water have partnered to assess the feasibility of piping recycled water approximately 3km from the local wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) to irrigate Beaufort’s sporting clubs and schools.

Supplying Beaufort’s sporting clubs and schools with recycled water will improve water supply security and climate resilience while benefiting the community and the environment by:

  • protecting and enhancing green spaces
  • conserving water reserves in Beaufort Lake for recreational use
  • reducing potable water consumption and supply costs
  • providing stakeholders with a sustainable, fit-for-purpose and affordable water supply

Organisations

Pyrenees Shire Council and Central Highlands Water are funding and delivering the feasibility study. The major stakeholders include Beaufort Golf and Bowls Club, Beaufort Football and Netball Club, Beaufort Croquet Club, Beaufort Secondary College and Beaufort Primary School.

Project Cost

Pyrenees Shire Council received grant funding of $10,000 from Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) through the Victorian Climate Change Fund to undertake the feasibility study. Central Highlands Water matched this with a further $10,000. The total of $20,000 was allocated to external consultants to undertake the feasibility study, with additional in-kind contributions from Pyrenees Shire Council and Central Highlands Water.

Timeframe

The feasibility study commenced in January 2017 and is expected to be completed in mid-2017.

It should be noted this project has been completed to feasibility study status only and project partners CHW and PSC will pursue funding opportunities in the next steps.
