This just released report card provides context for the changing face of the urban water industry. It highlights the fact that Australian Utilities cannot rely on dams alone and will need to utilise multiple sources of supply.
Adam Lovell, WSAA's Manager, Science and Sustainability states that "desalination plants are not the only option being pursued", and "the industry is also investing in recycling schemes, accessing ground water, aquifer storage and recharge, constructing water grids, building or improving dams and storm water recycling".
The key drivers for change in the water industry are climate change, increased population, environmental flows as well as meeting higher customer expectations. The cities of the future will have larger populations with the forecast from the ABS predicting Australia's population will reach 35.5 million by 2056, the majority occurring in the established urban areas.
